Is It Safe to Drive with a Cracked Windshield?

By Skyview Auto Glass TeamJune 15, 2025 7 min read

It's a question we hear every week: "My windshield has a crack — can I still drive?" The honest answer is: it depends on the size, location, and your state's laws. But in most cases, driving with a cracked windshield is riskier than people realize, and waiting longer almost always makes the problem worse and more expensive.

The Structural Role of Your Windshield

Most drivers think of the windshield as just a piece of glass that keeps wind and rain out. In reality, modern windshields are a load-bearing structural component of your vehicle. They contribute up to 70% of your car's roof crush strength in a rollover accident and help ensure airbags deploy correctly by providing a surface for the passenger-side airbag to deflect off of.

A compromised windshield — cracked, chipped, or improperly installed — is weaker than an intact one. In a serious accident, a structurally weakened windshield can fail catastrophically, increasing the risk of roof collapse and ejection.

Visibility Impairment

Cracks and chips directly impair your ability to see the road. A crack in your direct line of sight can cause glare in sunlight, distortion, and blind spots. Even a small chip in the lower corner of the windshield can catch light and momentarily blind you — exactly the scenario that causes accidents.

If a crack is in the driver's field of view (generally the area directly in front of the driver swept by windshield wipers), most states consider this a safety violation.

Is It Illegal to Drive with a Cracked Windshield?

Most states have laws against driving with a cracked windshield that impairs the driver's vision. In Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, obstructed driver visibility is a moving violation. While enforcement varies, a police officer can issue a citation if your crack is in the driver's line of sight. More importantly, a cracked windshield could affect fault determination in an accident claim.

When Is a Crack an Emergency?

Some cracks require immediate attention. You should not drive at all — or only drive to a repair location — if:

  • The crack runs across the driver's field of view
  • The crack is at the edge of the windshield and growing (edge cracks spread fastest)
  • The crack is longer than 12 inches
  • There are multiple cracks or a shattered area
  • The windshield bulges inward or has separated from the frame

How Fast Do Cracks Spread?

In Midwest climates, a chip or small crack can spread to a full-width crack in 24–48 hours under the right conditions. Direct sun exposure, sudden temperature changes, rain, or even a minor road vibration can cause rapid expansion. A chip you have on Monday morning might require a full replacement by Wednesday if temperatures drop overnight.

ADAS Safety Systems and Cracked Glass

Modern vehicles with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control — rely on cameras and sensors mounted behind the windshield. A crack near these sensors can interfere with their function, potentially disabling critical safety systems without triggering a dashboard warning. This is another reason why timely repair is important for newer vehicles.
