What Happens During a Windshield Replacement?

By Skyview Auto Glass TeamJuly 5, 2025 8 min read

If you've never had a windshield replaced before, the whole process might seem mysterious or daunting. What does the technician actually do? How long does it take? Is it safe to drive right away? These are all valid questions — and we believe in complete transparency about our work.

Here's an honest, step-by-step breakdown of exactly what happens during a professional windshield replacement with Skyview Auto Glass.

Step 1: Pre-Job Inspection and Setup (5–10 minutes)

When our technician arrives, the first thing they do is inspect the vehicle thoroughly. This includes checking the existing windshield and frame for any corrosion, damage, or prior improper installations that need to be addressed. They also inspect the vehicle's pillars and cowl area for any water damage that might indicate a previous seal failure.

The technician then sets up their work area, lays protective covers on the hood and interior, and unpacks the replacement glass. We pre-check the glass to ensure it's the correct part number for your specific vehicle year, make, model, and trim — because improper glass can affect ADAS sensor calibration and structural integrity.

Step 2: Removing the Old Windshield (15–20 minutes)

Using a specialized cold knife tool, the technician carefully cuts through the urethane adhesive bonding the windshield to the vehicle frame. This requires skill and care — a rushed removal can damage the paint, pinch welds, or vehicle frame.

Suction cups are used to safely remove and dispose of the old glass. The technician then carefully removes any remaining adhesive, rust, or debris from the frame surface to ensure the new windshield will bond correctly.

Step 3: Preparing the New Glass (10 minutes)

Before the new windshield is installed, the technician cleans it thoroughly with an automotive-grade glass cleaner and applies a glass primer to the edges. Primer improves adhesion and prevents moisture intrusion over time. This step is critical and often skipped by inexperienced or rushed technicians — which is why we always take our time here.

Step 4: Applying Urethane Adhesive (5 minutes)

A continuous bead of high-strength urethane adhesive is applied around the perimeter of the vehicle frame opening. The type and brand of urethane we use is rated for auto glass safety-standard-compliant installation and provides the structural bond that makes the windshield an integral part of your vehicle's safety system — not just a piece of glass.

Step 5: Setting the New Windshield (5–10 minutes)

Using suction cups and precise alignment tools, the technician carefully lowers the new windshield into position. This step requires accuracy — a misaligned windshield can leak, rattle, or in severe cases interfere with airbag deployment. The glass is gently pressed into the urethane and aligned with reference marks on the vehicle frame.

Step 6: Final Inspection and Cleanup (5–10 minutes)

Once the glass is set, the technician inspects the perimeter seal for any gaps, bubbles, or misalignment. Interior trim pieces are carefully replaced. The entire work area is cleaned — inside and out — and the technician will check any moldings, wiper arms, and sensors to ensure everything is reconnected properly.

Total Time: 60–90 Minutes

The full replacement process typically takes 60 to 90 minutes from arrival to completion. However, the glass needs additional curing time before you drive.

Safe Drive-Away Time

After installation, you'll need to wait at least 1 hour before driving at highway speeds, and ideally 8 hours before a car wash. During this time, keep one window slightly cracked to equalize pressure. Don't remove any retention tape the technician may have placed on the moldings for the first 24 hours.

ADAS Camera Recalibration

If your vehicle has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or forward collision warning — the camera mounted behind your windshield may need to be recalibrated after replacement. We can advise you on whether your specific vehicle requires this step and where to get it done.
