What auto glass work costs, and what changes the price

Auto glass is priced per vehicle, not per job. Two cars in the same driveway can take very different glass at very different cost. That is why we quote from your VIN rather than publish one number: the VIN tells us the exact part your car was built with, so the quote you get is the price for your car, not an average.

Why there is no single price

Auto glass is priced per vehicle, not per job. Two cars in the same driveway can take very different glass at very different cost. That is why we quote from your VIN rather than publish one number: the VIN tells us the exact part your car was built with, so the quote you get is the price for your car, not an average.

The four things that move the price

Which piece of glass

A windshield, a back glass, a door glass and a quarter glass are different parts with different costs. Windshields are usually the most expensive.

What is built into the glass

Modern windshields carry features that change the part number and the price: rain sensors, humidity sensors, heated wiper park, acoustic interlayer, heads-up display, camera and light brackets, heating elements, solar coatings, antennas. A base windshield and a heads-up-display windshield for the same model are not the same part. We list what each of those features actually is in our windshield features guide.

Whether your car needs ADAS calibration

If your windshield carries a forward-facing camera for lane keeping, automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise, that camera must be recalibrated after the glass is replaced - static, dynamic or both, depending on the vehicle. Calibration is a separate operation with its own cost and it is not optional.

Repair or replace

A chip or a short crack can often be repaired rather than replaced, which costs less and keeps the factory seal. Whether a repair is possible depends on size, depth, location and how long it has been there.

Most of our work is billed to insurance

We bill insurers directly, including State Farm, Allstate, GEICO, Progressive and USAA, and we file the glass claim for you at no charge. What you pay is governed by your own policy - your glass coverage and your deductible. Coverage and deductible details sit between you and your insurer. We will tell you what we find when we check. See our insurance claims page for how the claim process works.

Getting an exact number

Call the shop nearest you and have ready:

  • Your VIN (on the dash at the base of the windshield, or on your insurance card)
  • Which glass is damaged
  • Whether your car has a camera mounted behind the windshield
  • Your insurer, if you plan to claim

That is enough to quote the exact part and the exact work. Please call ahead before coming to a shop.
