Car Window Repair

“Car window repair” means different things depending on which glass is damaged. Here is what we can fix and how.

Broken or shattered door or side window

Side, door, vent and quarter windows are tempered glass, which breaks into small pieces rather than cracking — so it cannot be repaired. It is replaced. We vacuum the glass out of the door cavity, window track, seats and carpet, check the regulator and run channels, and fit new glass matched to your vehicle. See our car window replacement page for the full process.

Car door glass repair

Car door glass is tempered, so a broken or shattered door window is replaced rather than repaired — usually $180 to $400 out of pocket (see our pricing page). If the glass is fine but the window is stuck, crooked or fell into the door, the problem is the regulator or motor — see power window regulator repair.

Window won’t go up or down

If the glass is fine but the window is stuck, slow, crooked, off its track or drops into the door, the problem is usually the window regulator or the power window motor. We repair and replace window regulators and power window motors — at the shop or at your vehicle — and check the switch, track and run channels while the door panel is off. If the glass broke because the regulator failed, we replace both in the same visit. See our power window regulator repair page.

A common one: the regulator cable snaps and the glass falls down inside the door. Don’t keep pressing the switch — the glass can crack or jam. We take the door panel off, lift the glass back into its track, replace the regulator, and refit the glass if it is undamaged, or replace it if it broke.

Chip or crack in the windshield

The windshield is laminated, so a chip up to about quarter size, or a crack under about six inches outside the driver’s line of sight, can usually be repaired with resin in under 30 minutes. See our windshield repair and chip repair pages for what can be fixed and what cannot.

Broken rear window

The rear window is usually tempered and is replaced rather than repaired. We reconnect the defroster grid and any antenna so they work as they did before. See our rear windshield replacement page for the full process.

Until we get there

Cover the opening with heavy plastic and painter’s tape — not duct tape on the paint, which leaves residue that is hard to remove. Don’t slam the door, because the pressure change can push glass fragments further into the door cavity. Keep the car out of the rain. Mobile service comes to your driveway, workplace or a parking lot, and same-day is often available.

Cost

Door glass typically runs $180 to $400 out of pocket before tax. A windshield chip repair runs $75 to $150. Back glass runs $200 to $500+. Insurance usually covers glass under comprehensive coverage, and we file the claim for you. See our pricing page for the full breakdown.

Questions about car window repair

Can a shattered car window be repaired?

No — tempered side, door, vent and quarter glass shatters into small pieces and cannot be resin-filled. It is replaced. A laminated windshield, on the other hand, can often be repaired if the chip or crack is small enough.

How much does car window repair cost?

It depends on which glass and what happened. A windshield chip repair runs $75 to $150 out of pocket. A door glass replacement runs $180 to $400. A back glass replacement runs $200 to $500+. With comprehensive insurance, you usually owe only your deductible, and chip repair is often covered at no cost.

Does insurance cover a broken car window?

Yes — glass damage, including a break-in, falls under comprehensive coverage, subject to your deductible. We verify your coverage, file the claim for you at no charge, and bill your insurer directly.

Can you fix my car window today?

Often, yes. Same-day service is available at our shops or mobile at your location across Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. Call (248) 325-5559 and we will find the earliest slot.

Do you fix power windows that won't go up?

Yes. A stuck or slow power window is usually a failed regulator or motor. We repair or replace the window regulator and motor at the shop or on site; call (248) 325-5559.

My car window fell inside the door — can you fix it?

Yes. That usually means the regulator cable snapped. We replace the regulator and put the glass back in its track, or replace the glass if it broke, at the shop or at your vehicle.
