Seasonal Windshield Maintenance Guide

By Skyview Auto Glass TeamJune 28, 2025 7 min read

Living in the Midwest means your windshield faces some of the most extreme seasonal stress of any climate in the country. From Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles and lake-effect snow to Indiana's summer heat, your auto glass takes a beating — often in ways drivers don't notice until it's too late.

Here's a complete seasonal maintenance guide to help you protect your investment and avoid costly emergency replacements.

Winter: The Toughest Season for Windshields

Winter is when most windshield damage occurs. A tiny chip that's been sitting quietly since summer can crack across your entire windshield overnight when temperatures drop below freezing. Here's why: water seeps into the break, freezes, expands, and forces the crack open.

Winter maintenance tips:

  • Never pour hot water on a frozen windshield. The thermal shock can crack even undamaged glass. Use a proper ice scraper or let the defroster work gradually.
  • Defrost gradually. Turn on the defroster on low, then gradually increase — don't blast maximum heat at a cold windshield.
  • Use a windshield cover or sunshade overnight. This keeps ice from forming on the glass and makes your morning routine faster and safer.
  • Get existing chips repaired before winter hits. Any chip you have in November should be repaired immediately before the first hard freeze.
  • Check your wiper blades. Old, hardened rubber wiper blades can scratch your windshield and reduce visibility dangerously in freezing rain.

Spring: Repair Season

Spring is the best time to assess winter damage and get repairs done before chips grow. The moderate temperatures make resin repairs more effective and adhesives cure properly. If you notice any chips, cracks, or pitting, spring is the time to address them.

Spring maintenance tips:

  • Inspect your windshield carefully for chips that may have formed over winter.
  • Clean your glass thoroughly with an automotive glass cleaner — not household glass cleaner, which can leave residue.
  • Apply a rain-repellent treatment like Rain-X to improve water beading and visibility in spring showers.
  • Check your wiper blades and replace them if they're streaking or skipping.

Summer: Heat and UV Stress

Summer heat creates its own type of windshield stress. Parked in direct sunlight, the inside of your car can reach 150°F — and the windshield itself gets even hotter. This thermal stress can cause existing damage to spread and can weaken the urethane adhesive seal around the glass perimeter.

Summer maintenance tips:

  • Park in shade whenever possible, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Use a windshield sunshade when parked to reduce interior temperatures and UV exposure to the glass.
  • Never blast the AC at maximum immediately upon entering a very hot car — let the temperature equalize gradually.
  • Inspect the seal around your windshield. If you see gaps, bubbling, or discoloration, the adhesive may be failing — contact a technician.

Fall: Pre-Winter Prep

Fall is your last chance to address any damage before the brutal Midwest winter arrives. It's also the season when falling leaves and debris, combined with morning frost, can create visibility problems and new chip opportunities.

Fall maintenance tips:

  • Repair all chips before the first freeze. This is non-negotiable for Midwest drivers.
  • Install new wiper blades — many auto stores sell winter-specific blades that handle ice better.
  • Check your washer fluid and switch to a freeze-resistant fluid rated for your area's minimum temperatures.
  • Clean your windshield and apply a protective coating before temperatures drop.

Year-Round Best Practices

Beyond seasonal care, these habits protect your windshield all year long:

  • Maintain a safe following distance from trucks and construction vehicles to avoid rock strikes.
  • Replace wipers every 6–12 months before they start dragging on the glass.
  • Address any chip or crack within 48 hours of noticing it.
  • Never use metal scrapers, squeegees, or abrasive materials on your windshield.
