How to defrost a windshield fast — without cracking it

By Skyview Auto Glass Team · November 1, 2026

Michigan, Indiana and Illinois winters put a windshield through hard freezes, road salt and big swings between a cold morning and a hot defroster. Most cold-weather cracks we replace start as a small chip that met one of those swings.

Getting ice off the windshield

  • Start the engine, set the climate control to defrost with the air on outside air (not recirculate), and let the glass warm from the inside for a few minutes before you scrape.
  • Use a plastic scraper. Never use a metal tool, a key or a credit card edge.
  • Never pour hot or boiling water on frozen glass. The sudden temperature change can crack it, and a chip that is already there is the usual starting point.
  • A de-icer spray (or a mix of about two parts isopropyl rubbing alcohol to one part water in a spray bottle) loosens ice faster.
  • Clear the whole windshield, not a porthole — driving with an obstructed view is a ticketable offence.

Why does my windshield fog up inside?

Fog is moisture from your breath, wet boots and clothes condensing on cold glass. Turn on the defroster with the A/C on (it dries the air even with heat), use outside air rather than recirculate, crack a window for a minute, and keep the inside of the glass clean — a film on the inside makes fog cling. Wipe the inside with a clean microfiber cloth and glass cleaner.

Can windshield washer fluid freeze?

Yes. Summer or “bug wash” fluid can freeze in the reservoir and lines and on the glass. Switch to a winter-rated fluid (rated well below zero) before the first hard freeze, and don’t top up with plain water.

Why cold weather turns a chip into a crack

Water gets into an open chip, freezes and expands, and the glass is stressed again when the defroster heats the inside while the outside is still freezing. That is why a chip that sat quietly all fall can run across the windshield on the first cold morning. A chip up to about the size of a quarter can usually be repaired in under 30 minutes — get it repaired before the freeze, and in the meantime put clear tape over it to keep water out.

Quick winter windshield checklist

  • Winter washer fluid in the reservoir
  • Wiper blades replaced if they streak or chatter (and lifted off the glass overnight before a freeze if you park outside)
  • Chips repaired before the first hard freeze
  • Plastic scraper and brush in the car
  • Defroster blowing warm air on the glass within a few minutes of starting
