Windshield repair kit vs professional chip repair

By Skyview Auto Glass Team · November 1, 2026

A DIY windshield repair kit costs about the same as a couple of coffees, and the appeal is obvious: fix the chip yourself, in the driveway, for a tenth of what a shop charges. Sometimes that works. More often, it does not — and a failed kit repair can turn a $75 chip repair into a full windshield replacement. Here is the honest breakdown of when a kit helps, where it falls short, and what a professional resin repair actually does differently.

What a DIY windshield repair kit is

A DIY windshield repair kit is a small bottle of resin, an applicator or bridge that sits over the chip, and curing strips. The sun’s UV cures the resin. Kits usually cost about $10 to $25 at an auto parts store.

When a kit can work

A kit can work on a small, fresh bullseye chip — smaller than a quarter, out of the driver’s line of sight, clean and completely dry, done on a mild, sunny day. In that narrow set of conditions, the resin can fill the break well enough to stop it spreading.

Where kits fall short

  • A hand-pressure applicator cannot pull the air out of the break the way a professional vacuum-and-pressure injector does, so resin often does not fill every leg of the damage — it can stay cloudy or keep spreading.
  • Star breaks, combination breaks and cracks are hard to fill with a kit.
  • Moisture or dirt trapped under cured resin is permanent.
  • Once DIY resin has cured in a chip, a professional usually cannot re-inject it — so a failed kit repair often turns a repairable chip into a replacement.

What a professional repair does differently

The technician cleans and dries the break, draws a vacuum on it, injects optically matched resin under pressure into every void, cures it under UV light and polishes the surface. The vacuum-and-pressure cycle is the part a kit cannot replicate, and it is what gets the resin into every leg of the damage. It is usually done in under 30 minutes, at the shop or on site.

Before and after: what to expect

A repair restores strength and stops the chip from spreading. It makes the damage much less visible, but a faint mark often remains — the goal is a sound windshield, not an invisible one. Under direct sunlight at a shallow angle you may still see where the impact was, and that is normal.

Cost

A kit is about $10 to $25. Professional chip repair is usually $75 to $150 out of pocket — the range on our pricing page — and many insurers waive the deductible for chip repair, so it often costs you nothing. See how the insurance side works in our guide to chip repair coverage.
