Glass Quality

OEM vs. aftermarket windshields: what actually matters

OEM glass is made by the manufacturer's supplier to the original print; OEM-equivalent glass is made to the same specification by another maker. What matters is that the replacement carries every feature the original had — the acoustic layer, rain sensor, heated wiper park, heads-up display coating and camera bracket — because a windshield missing one of those will not perform the same or calibrate correctly. We quote both where both exist, for your exact VIN.

The words you will hear

OEM glass is made by the vehicle manufacturer's glass supplier to the original print. OEM-equivalent glass is made to the same specification by another maker. “Aftermarket” is used loosely — sometimes for OEM-equivalent glass, sometimes for glass that fits the opening but drops features. Ask which features a quote includes, not just which label it carries.

The features that have to match

The acoustic layer, rain sensor, heated wiper park, heads-up display interlayer, camera bracket and printed antennas all change the part number. A windshield missing one of them will not perform the same, and a wrong camera bracket or optical specification will not calibrate correctly. Each feature is explained on our windshield features page.

Will insurance pay for OEM glass?

Your policy decides. Some policies pay for OEM glass only with an OEM endorsement. When we open the claim we check what your policy covers and quote the options that fit it.

How we choose the glass

By VIN. The VIN identifies the exact glass part your vehicle was built with, and we quote OEM and OEM-equivalent options for it where both exist — OEM or OEM-equivalent only, with every feature the original had.

Questions about OEM and aftermarket glass

Are OEM windshields better than aftermarket?

OEM glass is made by the manufacturer's supplier to the original print; OEM-equivalent glass is made to the same specification by another maker. What matters is that the replacement carries every feature the original had — the acoustic layer, rain sensor, heated wiper park, heads-up display coating and camera bracket — because a windshield missing one of those will not perform the same or calibrate correctly. We quote both where both exist, for your exact VIN.

How do I find an OEM windshield for my vehicle?

By VIN. The VIN identifies the exact glass part — including options like HUD or acoustic laminate — so you are not guessing from year and model. Give us the VIN and we quote the OEM and OEM-equivalent options for it.

Does aftermarket glass affect ADAS calibration?

It can. A windshield with the wrong camera bracket or optical specification will not calibrate correctly. That is why we match the part to the VIN before anything is ordered.

Will insurance pay for an OEM windshield?

Your policy decides. Some policies pay for OEM glass only with an OEM endorsement; we check when we open the claim.
