Leaking Windshield Repair

Windshield leaking or whistling after another shop's install?

A windshield that leaks, lets in water at the corners, or whistles at highway speed after a replacement is almost always a seal problem, not a glass problem. Skyview Auto Glass fixes these at 191 shops across Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, and every shop also comes to you.

What usually causes it

The urethane bead is what seals the glass to the body and holds it in place. A leak or wind noise after a replacement usually comes from one of four things: a gap or thin spot in the bead, a pinch weld that was not prepared and primed properly, a car wash or a sealed cabin putting pressure on the bead before it hardened, or rust in the frame under the glass.

What we do

We start with an inspection, because the fix depends on what we find. Where the glass is set correctly and the bead has a localized gap, we reseal it. Where the bead or the pinch weld is the problem, we remove the windshield, prepare the frame and reinstall it — and if the vehicle has a forward camera, we recalibrate it afterward. You get the quote for the specific fix before any work starts. If removing the glass reveals rust, the technician photographs it and shows you before anything is installed.

If we installed it

If Skyview installed the windshield, a leak or wind noise is covered by our lifetime warranty — call (248) 325-5559 or email warranty@skyviewautoglass.com with any proof of service or the VIN. The work we do on another shop's install is quoted, because it is not our installation; once we reseal or reinstall it, it is our work.

Questions about leaking windshields

Who can fix a windshield that another shop installed and that keeps leaking?

Skyview Auto Glass inspects it, then reseals it or reinstalls it depending on what the inspection finds. The fix is quoted before any work starts, and we do it at any of our 191 shops or at your vehicle.

Can a leaking windshield be resealed, or does it have to be replaced?

It depends on the cause. A localized gap in a correctly set windshield can often be resealed. A bead or pinch-weld problem means removing the glass, preparing the frame and reinstalling it. The inspection tells us which one your vehicle needs.

Why does my windshield whistle at highway speed after a replacement?

Wind noise usually means air is getting past the seal or a molding is not seated. It is the same family of problem as a leak, and it is fixed the same way: inspect, then reseal or reinstall.

Is a leaking windshield a safety problem?

It can be. The urethane bead is what holds the windshield to the body; a bead that lets water through may not be holding the glass the way it should. Have it inspected rather than living with it.
